1.  A GOOD QUALITY Band instrument.  If you purchase an inferior instrument, you will
regret it and end up purchasing a quality instrument anyway.

2.
Beginning woodwind and brass students need The “Standard Of Excellence” book 1
and 2.  Beginning percussion students need a practice pad, 5A or 5B snare drum sticks and
the "Alfred's Snare Drum Method" book 1.  These books, instruments and equipment are
available from the local music stores.  Intermediate and Advanced students need a quality
band instrument and the materials/equipment to keep the instrument(s) in good working
order.  Everything else is provided.

3.  Patience!  It is not like playing “Guitar Hero”! With cheat codes and a reset button.  This,
like all worthwhile things takes time.

4.  The willingness to work and work with others.

5.  You ARE in the Band!! There is no need to have prior music experience.  I will teach you
how to read music and play your band instrument.  But you need to progress,
YOU
MUST PRACTICE!
Otherwise, all of the other Band members will pass you by
and you will be frustrated and have to take Beginning Band again and still practice.

6.  You can purchase quality instruments from several music stores in the area.  Sometimes
yard sales, pawn shops, relatives, friends, the paper,
etc.

7.  Web sites to look at: the Roy Junior High School Razorback Bands: www.rjhsbands.com
we have a lot to look at and there are many help items on the “links” page.

8.  Have a GOOD attitude.  It is impossible for you to learn and impossible for me to teach if
you have the “I dare you to teach me” attitude.  Come with a willingness to work, participate
and learn!  Then you won’t just have fun, you will have a BLAST!!

9.  If you are having some trouble,
come in and see me!  I am here
to help you.
That is a large part of my job!  The best time
is in the morning.  I am usually in my office by 6:00 a.m. Or 6:30 a.m.

10.  You may also wish to consider taking private lessons.  I recommend this and have
names and phone numbers of several private instructors in the area.  The music stores
should also have a list of private instructors.

11.  Also, you may contact me at: 801-476-5260 or e-mail (usually the best way to get in
touch):
phermann@weber.k12.ut. Or our web site: www.rjhbands.com
