The “Band” Decision
Roy Jr High has a great tradition of fine bands. Performing for others on your
instrument is fun. Studies have shown that those who learn the discipline of playing an
instrument test better in other subject areas such as math and science. Learning an
instrument gives a life-long appreciation for music. Students in the beginning band do
not need prior experience playing an instrument. Learning an instrument is much
easier than most people think.

The “Instrument” Decision
Students usually do well playing an instrument that is of their choosing. During the first
few days of school, students who have not decided which instrument to play will be
given assistance. The registration procedure required the beginning band student to
choose between the brass, woodwind and percussion classes. This can be adjusted
later of a student needs to change from one class to another. Instruments to be
taught in the beginning classes as follows:

Beginning Brass-Trumpet, French horn, Trombone, Baritone and Tuba.

Beginning Woodwinds-Clarinet, Flute, Oboe and Bassoon.

Beginning Percussion-Snare Drum (bass drum, timpani, bells and cymbals).

Students who would like to learn the saxophone should start on the clarinet.

When is the best time to join band?
Seventh grade is the best time to start a band instrument. Starting later makes it hard
to learn enough to play in the high school band. Students who start band in the 8th or
9th grade and find out how much fun is, wish they had started sooner.

Where do I get an instrument?
The school rents oboes, bassoons, baritones, tubas and French horns. Students who
want to play flute, clarinet, trumpet (cornet) or trombone must provide their own
instrument. Local music stores have reasonable “rent-to-own” agreements. This
allows a student to play for the first three months for as little as $5.00-$10.00.
Afterward, there is a monthly payment. This provides enough time for the student,
parent and teacher to determine how successfully the student may be with a very
small financial investment. Beginning percussion students must purchase a practice
pad with stand and drum sticks.

Getting started
You will not need an instrument on the first day of school. The teacher will have
instrument rental information and help students who are undecided about their
instrument choice, make up their mind. If you have any questions, please call Paul
Hermann at 476-5260 (Roy Junior High School, 5400 South 2100 West, Roy, Utah

Why Should I
Take Band?

Have you ever asked yourself this question?  When I was registering for seventh grade, I asked myself this
same question, along with many others.  It seemed that every person who joined band, enjoyed it and I'd taken
interest in the trumpet.  So I took a chance and took band.  That was one of the best choices I've ever made in
my life.  I don't know were I'd be if I hadn't made that choice.
Band improves your life.  There have been student who only come to school for band.  Some keep their
grades up so they can go to band activities.  Band lets you be yourself.  You can be crazy and still be normal
since everyone else is the same way.  You don't have to take my word for it, other band members agree with
these things as well.
Rachel Toone said,"Band is a strange family you join."
Stacie Carter said,"Band is a way to interact with other people and get new friends.  It's fun and you learn a
lot."
Brittany Choppin said,"The fun memories last forever."
As you imagine, everyone who takes band loves it. So join band today, you'll
NEVER regret it!
