AND
THE
R. J. H. BANDS

Yes, I play in a bagpipe band, called the "Galloway Highlanders Pipes and Drums". They
have performed with our bands here at Roy Junior High School and other schools in the
Ogden area and throughout Utah as well as various events and cities around Utah and the
continental U. S., for dignitaries like Margaret Thacher and the list goes on.
I play my pipes for my students on occasion, usually on their birthday and usually receive
requests to teach them the how to play the Bagpipes or Highland Style Drumming. For all of
you out there, weather you are in my band program or not, a former student, a parent or just
someone who wants to learn to play the pipes or drums I have some information on how to
get started and get lessons:
1. Contact the Galloway Highlanders Pipes and Drums through their web site:
www.gallowayhighlanders.com
2. Contact Robert Rowe (our Pipe Major) at home: (801) 731-1813,
cell: (801)698-5746, e-mail: lnd_rw@yahoo.com
3. Contact Dale Hawkins (Pipe Sgt., the guy who teaches us): www.gallowayhighlanders.com

by the state of Utah, so be sure to sign your e-mail and watch what you send!
WHAT ABOUT LESSONS??
Yes, we do teach lessons - how to play the drums and bagpipes for our band. They cost
about $20.00 per lesson. You would need a "Practice Chanter" (for bagpipes). It is
recommended that you purchase one from a store specializing in Scottish Musical
Instruments. This information is available from us and on line. For Drums: You will need a
pair of Scottish Drum Sticks or Tenor Drum Mallets and a Practice Pad. The sticks and
mallets are available from the same store(s) specializing in Scottish Musical Instruments. The
practice pad can be purchased at any music store selling percussion equipment.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN TO PLAY?
That is determined by how much you practice and your efforts to learn. In other words, your
Dedication, Discipline and Desire. Usually about 6 months to a year for both the bagpipes
and drums. However, if you have some experience with drums and can read music, you will
be able to pick up the Highland Drum Style much faster. Bagpipes.....still 6 months to a year.
WHO CAN I PLAY WITH?
The Galloway Highlanders Pipes And Drums!!!
*IS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY?
*WHICH INSTRUMENT WILL I LEARN TO PLAY?
*WHAT WILL YOU TEACH ME?
No. It is not necessary to have any music experience. We will teach you from "square one".
You will learn how to read music, learn about the instrument that you want to play - Its History,
Care, Maintenance and of course - How to play the: Bagpipes, Snare Drum, Tenor Drum or
Bass Drum. YOU choose which of these to learn.
**CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE IN THE R.J.H.S.BAND
PROGRAM? OR OTHER BAND PROGRAM IF I
CHOOSE TO BE IN THE GALLOWAY HIGHLANDERS
PIPES AND DRUMS?
The answer is YES! Participation with the pipe band will only enhance
your school's band program and will help you both develop and enhance your musicianship
skills to learn music, your school band instrument and to perform in your school band
program. Your marching abilities will also be enhanced.
A WORD FROM Mr. Hermann:
I have been teaching music/band in the Weber School District for the past 19 years. I have
had students in my band program, brass, woodwind and percussion students who have
participated with the Galloway Highlanders. Their experience in this group and what they
were taught benefited my students and my band program. One of my former percussion
students is still with the group playing the bagpipes. There have been others from
surrounding schools who have turned out with us and brought valuable skills that enhanced
their various band programs at all age levels.
The parents and other adults that have turned out with the pipe band now have a fun and
rewarding hobby.
